First Look: Archer: The Danger Zone!

By Matt Hyra

In Archer: The Danger Zone! Board Game, each player takes on the role of a member of the ISIS “team” and competes to gain the upper hand over their fellow players. Each round of the game starts out at the ISIS offices, and then progresses to a Mission in some far-flung land. Watch your co-workers fail miserably at the Mission Challenges, while you show them what skill and confidence looks like.

Play as one of your favorite characters from the show: Sterling Archer, Malory Archer, Lana Kane, Cyril Figgis, Pam Poovey, Cheryl Tunt, Ray Gillette, or Dr. Krieger. You also get a personalized deck of cards along with that character, full of insults, ego boosts, and other sexy shenanigans to spring on your fellow players.

There are six different ISIS Office locations available, but you don’t play with all of them each game, so every game plays out differently. They are Malory’s Office, Control Room, Reception, Breakroom, Bullpen, and Applied Research Lab. Each location grants a special ability to the first player to enter that room each round.

At the start of the round, each player chooses a token with one of the locations listed on it, and places it face down in front of their character card. The tokens are then placed onto the board in initiative order. Initiative can change each round, so you may go first sometimes or you might not. The more people to enter the office ahead of you, the lower your chances of being the first player into a location. When your plans are so rudely thwarted, you might feel like insulting the player who beat you to the punch. Roll the dice and see if you think of anything! If you succeed, you get to draw one of the cards from your deck and play it immediately. You might gain some Upper Hand, cause one of the players who pissed you off to lose some Upper Hand, or something else entirely.

Once everyone has entered the office, it’s time for a mission and the challenges that come with it. Draw a number of Challenge cards based on the number of players in the game. Oh, did we mention that the game is for 2 – 8 players? Yeah, it’s a party.

The Challenges allow characters to use their “skills:” Booze, Guns, Sex, and Smarts. If you succeed in a Challenge, you score some sweet Upper Hand over your opponents (the number on the ping pong paddle). The first player to hit 20 Upper Hand wins! You start at 5, so it’s not as hard as you might think.

Also included is an Event deck. These are guest stars from the show and always promise a good time. If you order now, you can be assured of receiving a First Printing of the game, which will include 2 Promo Event cards inside the box! Here they are:
