Once Upon a Time Season 1 New Configuration

By Miranda Charsky

We have been very encouraged by how often fans and collectors have asked us about the forthcoming Once Upon a Time Season 1 Trading Cards. As we have finished approvals with Disney, I wanted to share a preview of the cards. The base set consist of 45 cards going through the story of how The Evil Queen cursed the residents of Fairy Tale Land, and how Emma has moved to Storybrooke to be closer to her son and help break the curse.

The Price of Magic chase set focuses on how magic has impacted the characters of Storybrook and Fairy Tale Land. A common theme in the show is that all magic has its price, and the cursed residents have certainly paid a price.

We received a lot of awesome costumes and wardrobe material for the show and I think fans are really going to enjoy these awesome cards. For the Fairy Tale Land costumes, similar to the costumes for Downton Abbey, we received sections of the material used to create the costumes.  Given that a lot of these costumes are on display and sometimes tour for fans to admire, I completely understand the desire to maintain them whole, and we are still very excited to get the extra materials from the costumers as they are still really great fabrics.

The autograph cards for the 10 confirmed signers (there is one other actor who we have a verbal agreement from, who we will announce as soon as I feel comfortable that we will receive the cards in-house) are broken into “Good” and “Bad” categories. The cards for the “Bad” characters use a blue pallet associated with season one (we will switch to purple for season two), and the “Good” characters have a warmer gold pallet.

Robert Carlyle as Mr. Gold / Rumplestiltskin

We have some truly beautiful sketch cards to include in the boxes, which will be inserted 1 in 25 boxes. These very realistic sketches were drawn by some of the top artists and I have been really excited to see these as they came in to the office.

While a lot of this information isn’t new—it has been up on the product page for months—the format for this upcoming set is very new. Instead of the 24-pack blind-reveal box, we will be consolidating the packaging to be straight to the point! The smaller box will include a complete base set, two of The Price of Magic chase cards, and then a combination of four Autograph and Wardrobe cards: either 2 Autograph and 2 Wardrobe cards, or 1 Autograph and 3 Wardrobe cards. Boxes will be packaged 10 to a case.

The question comes down to why we made the change and the simple answer is that I think it will be a better experience for collectors. With such a small base set, opening 24 packs in a box, even with 6 of those packs containing special inserts, I believe would become an anticlimactic experience with a lot of duplicate cards. In this format, fans will get all of the same cards but in a more efficient packaging. I want collecting these cards to be a fun and enjoyable experience, and I really believe this particular packaging strategy is the best option.
